Thomas Husson of Forrester http://blogs.forrester.com/thomas_husson/11-09-16-the_global_mainstreaming_of_smartphones?cm_mmc=RSS-_-MS-_-1709-_-blog_2317 makes some excellent observations about the fact that smartphone uptake is over 25% in the most developed countries but that you need to design for less feature rich phones and also to be aware of how your users interact. I'd say it's abiout setting a 'highest common demoninatopr' approach where you can to offer the best experience across all phones, but using native features really well when the best possible interction is valued by your customers.
